After 20 years in the training industry helping fortune 500 companies grow, improve, and upskill their employees, I never stopped and asked myself “Why?” I graduated with my master’s degree and climbed the corporate ladder several times and found myself trying to convince my employees that their jobs were secure, and their future was bright when I didn’t believe it myself.
I’m a father of 6 girls and I take providing for and protecting my family seriously. It was hard for me to answer, “If you didn’t have to worry about anything, what would you do with your career?” When I was finally able to let myself dream, I found my Why. My greatest joy is helping people be happy, growing, and achieving their goals. I want to do that for the rest of my career. That’s why I became a career ownership coach.
I don’t consider myself to be a risk taker or the entrepreneurial type. But I spent 6 months interviewing executives and top managers about their careers and their dreams and found that those who worked for others were less passionate about their jobs and were uncertain about their job security. Those I interviewed who owned their careers were excited about what they did, more optimistic about their future, and had clarity about why they were doing it. My wife and I realized owning our own career was less risky and gave us more control over our family’s future.
